Beyond Ebony/Jet: The Architecture of John Moutoussamy - Tour Day 2019

  • 40 West 35th Street Chicago, IL, 60609 United States (map)

Join us on Sunday, October 13 for our annual Docomomo US Tour Day. This year’s theme The Diversity of Modernism, serves to recognize the work of minority and female architects of the Modern Movement.

The Chicago chapter will lead a tour of the work of architect John Moutoussamy, best known as the designer of the Johnson Publishing Company Building, home of Ebony and Jet magazines and the only high-rise office building in downtown Chicago with both an African American client and architect. In a career that spanned nearly four decades, Moutoussamy designed a wide variety of building types, including residential towers, health care facilities and schools.

We will go on a guided trolley tour of eight of his buildings, including the award-winning Lawless Gardens housing complex and Moutoussamy’s own house in Chatham. The tour also includes stops at the Regents Park apartments, the Chicago Urban League, the Bessie Coleman Library, and Olive-Harvey City College. The tour will begin at 12 pm and will last approximately 2 ½ - 3 hours. Tour cost is $30 for Docomomo members and $40 for non-members.
